Attention:
Board of Directors
Terry Dekouski, President.
As per the Constitution and By-Laws of Canandaigua American Legion Post #256, Ind., Article XV, Section 10: “The Annual Meeting of the Corporation shall be held in the quarters of Canandaigua American Legion Post #256, Inc. on the evening of the third (3) Thursday in the
month of October of each year. The meeting shall be convened at 7:30 PM.”
In accordance, I, Terry Dekouski, President of the Board of Directors, direct that the Annual
Corporation meeting will be held on Thursday, October 15, 2009. Meeting to convene at 7:30 PM as directed. The two Directors whose terms are expiring at this meeting are Terry Dekouski and Irene Madru. Members of the nominating committee are: Fran Bucher, Ken Weiner and Calvin Nichols. If you are interested in either of these positions, please contact one of the
afore mentioned or use the sign up sheet posted in the lounge of the Canandaigua American Legion. A minimum of 20 members must be present in order to conduct this very important annual business.

On a personal note, I would like to thank everybody that was involved in helping for the Fred Schutz memorial out front. Also for all those who helped construct the handicapped ramps and concrete work at the Pavilion. Special thanks to Scott Gillmor, the mason, for his quality workmanship.

Legion News from Bob Fredericks, Commander
A new quarter has started. First off, I would like to say our yearly fund raiser, the 2009
Cash Bash, was very successful. Thanks to all who bought or sold tickets.

October is here and the only thing I can see is the National Commanderʼs Visitation Dinner on October 24th in Dresden. If you are interested, make reservations by October 15th; the price is $28.
Veterans Day Dinner, November 7th, at the Post Home. At this special occasion we will be recognizing our Boysʼ Staters and Girlsʼ Staters and our past Post Commanders and Past Unit Presidents. Cash Cocktail Hour will begin at 6:00 with Dinner at 7 PM. Meal will be a choice of Filet Mignon or Chicken Cordon Bleu, baked potato, vegetable, rolls, dessert, coffee or tea. Cost of Filet, $18.00, Cordon Bleu, $14.00. Please call the Post Home at 585-394-3790 prior to November 1, 2009 to make your reservations. Payment in advance, please.
Nov. 11 is our Veteransʼ Day ceremony, at 11:00 AM, followed immediately by the dedication of the Fred Schutz Memorial. There will be a reception following these events. Nov. 15 is the Early Bird Dinner so get your dues in by Nov. 11 and enjoy a free dinner.

I would like to thank our faithful Honor Guard for their service throughout this past summer for parades, holidays and funerals. We are very, very lucky to have this dedicated group of members. I would like to welcome the following new members to the Honor Guard: Ron Evans, Jeremy Thompson, and Lloyd Savage.

Thanks also to the Auxiliary for setting up the POW/MIA table inside the Hall. Stop for a moment to remember and honor those unable to be among us.

Patriot Day Ceremony - a thanks to the Honor Guard and the Auxiliary for helping with the distribution of the programs and candles. To Chuck Pelton for organizing the ceremony from the Commons on Main Street to the Post. To the Firemen, Police and Troopers, EMT personnel and others who marched from the Commons to the Trail of Remembrance led by the Fraedan Or
Pipers. Twelve year old, Aviella Winder was the soloist. Ryan Hobart played taps.

Monday Member Appreciation Nights are held every other Monday, through October, for members who like to come and have a drink, snack and socialize with one another.

One last request for help. Each year we serve as ʻRed Kettleʼ volunteers for a couple of days at a local site during the latter part of November. When the sign-up list is posted in the lounge, please sign up for an hour to help the Salvation Army in their annual fund raising campaign.

Sergeant at Arms - Chuck Pelton
I want to thank the Post Family for their help with the programs during the past year. Our
next Legion program is Veterans Day, November 11th at 11 AM. On that day we will ʻcloseʼ the Trail of Remembrance in a year that focused on the Colonial Wars. The flags will be retired for another year, but you are still invited to walk the trail and reminisce.

St. Paulyʼs Clothing Collection by Fran Bucher, Chairman
Another year is nearing an end and St. Paulyʼs clothing collection is still one of our major fundraisers. Itʼs a lot of work and we could use some help. Anyone wishing to participate in this program - please see Fran Bucher or Dan Bresnan. The work involves bagging the clothing and textiles that are dropped off at the shed - 10 minutes or less each day. Special thanks to Dan for all his work this year.

Auxiliary News Barb Saar, President
Well, I hope everyone had a great summer. Here we are at the start of a new year. I was very happy to see so many members at our first meeting. Sure hope you come back again. We are going to be very busy this year. So, if you are asked to do something, please try to do it. Donʼt forget, our meetings are the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month at the Post Home at 2:00 PM.
Department Convention was July 9 - 11, 2009. Our new Department Officers are: President - Karyn Porempski, 1st Vice President - Nancy Kurk, 2nd Vice President - Anne Geer, 3rd Vice President - Sally Johnston. Since the 2nd Vice from last year had resigned, we elected a new 2nd Vice as well as a 3rd Vice.

Department President Karynʼs project is twofold: the Creative Arts Program run by the VA as a form of rehabilitation and the Warriors Family Assistance, with a particular focus on the veterans of the Gulf War, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Fall Conference was Sept 12, 2009 at Mt. Morris. Attending were Barb Saar, Rose Cornish, Marlene Milton, Marie Trumbull, Florence Trumbull, Deb Dekouski, Sandy Counceller, Barbara Lyke and Dee Paddock. The 7th District Color Guard posted the colors and the 7th District Flag. They are Barb Saar, Marlene Milton, Marie Trumbull, Rose Cornish and Vicky Milton. The Department officers attended the Conference, which was presided over by the 7th District President, Virginia Robbins and Vice President, Kathleen Cubit.

Empire Girlsʼ State information has been received and a citizen will be chosen from our area in the spring. The good news is that Brockport College will again host the program, but, after several years without a raise, the tuition will increase for 2010.

Leadership by Rose Cornish
The Seventh District Leadership Conference,
Sat. Oct 17, 2009, at Canandaigua
Post #256, 8:00 - 9:00 AM Registration and Continental breakfast. 9:00 AM - 12:00 Conference. Deadline for reservation is Oct. 12, 2009. Remember that by each of us sharing
resources, such as wisdom, information, experience, confidence and insight, we facilitate the development of all members and ensure the continued legacy of our organization.

Community Service by Chairman Marlene Milton
The Auxiliary this year would like to start helping the community places that are helping
people who need food and paper products. We all help people during the holidays, however we all need food year ʻround. Iʼm asking Auxiliary, Legionnaire and Sons of the Legion members to work together to accomplish this. Whenever you have a meeting or come to the Post Home, perhaps you could bring non-perishable canned goods or paper products with you and drop them in the blue bucket. Iʼm hoping also to get assistance from our friends & neighbors so please talk it up with them.

The Auxiliary Unit is supporting the “Wreaths Across America” program, which sponsors the laying of wreaths on graves at VA cemeteries across the land. The simultaneous wreath laying, including at Bath, will be on Dec. 12. Applications for the sponsorship of a wreath in honor of your deceased are available in the lounge at the Post Home.

Membership Rose Cornish, “Worker Bee”.
Buzz-Buzz “Letʼs strive to Fill the Hive.” All you Honey Beeʼs, they buzz here and there just everywhere with dues to fill the hive. Our hive is getting near full only 182 members paid, our goal 285. So become a DO-BEE and start buzzing about membership for this year!
We would like to welcome our new members: Ellen Taylor, Karen Mills, Judy Smith, Lucille Wells, Jackie Smith, Karen Herman, Sharon Joslyn, and Transfers: Dorothy Nickel, Virginia Botsford, and Junior Member: Sarah Luzum.

Remember all dues paid by Nov. 11th makes you an “Early Bird” and eligible for a free dinner on Sun, Nov. 15th at 3 PM. So lets Bee prepared, Bee Creative, BeeLieve in our organization! Working together we can full the hive!

EARLY BIRD DINNER
Sun. Nov. 15th, 2009 - 3PM
This year we are doing things a little different. With “Unity of Family” in our organization of Legion, Auxiliary, and Sons of the Legion, we would like to all sit down and eat at one time!
Our menu: Spaghetti & meatballs, French bread, tossed salad, dessert, coffee or tea. Those Paid members bringing a nonmember guest will be charged $8.50. REMEMBER; your dues must be paid by Nov. 11th to receive your free dinner!! To pay dues contact the following: Legion membership: Dick Milton. Auxiliary membership: Rose Cornish. SAL membership: Brian Murphy.

Children and Youth by Chair Sandy Counceller
The Special Peopleʼs delivery of gifts and cookies is scheduled for Dec. 5. Donations of cookies are always welcome and thoroughly enjoyed by the young people.

VA&R - Deb Dekouski, acting chairman
The Auxiliary and Post will continue to host “The Veterans Club” at the monthly Roast Beef & Spaghetti dinners. Thanks to the volunteers that serve our Veterans each month.

Manufacturerʼs Coupons
National Security Chair, Rosemary Luzum.
Our supporters have done an outstanding job of supplying the Auxiliary with manufacturerʼs coupons. REMEMBER!!! Coupons MUST be no older than three months. Since July, 43 volunteers have spent 300 hours so that we could send coupons valued at $63,000 to our military families at bases overseas. GOOD JOB, EVERYONE. A special thanks to all who cut the coupons out so my mother, Ceil, my husband, Jerry, and I donʼt spend so many hours clipping.
Troop Fan Mail
We again hope to send cards to service members this Christmas. Our plan last year to send the cards directly to Chaplains of units seemed to have worked well so we will again try to do that. With so much negative press coverage, our troops like to hear a friendly message of gratitude. If you want to start writing cards now, your message should be positive and upbeat. Include info
about yourself, your hobbies, job, pets, etc. Greeting cards (NO envelopes) should be no
larger than 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 and should have the senderʼs name and address on the back,
Address labels are acceptable since many greeting cards have a very slick surface that
is difficult to write on. ALL cards MUST be at the Post by December 1. They can be placed in the same area as the coupons. Last year we received many letters of thanks from both the chaplains and the soldiers.

Education by Chair Marie Trumbull
The American Legion Family realizes the importance of providing our youth with support in the form of various scholarships to make a difference in their lives and in our futures since they ARE the leaders of the future. Therefore, the applications for the Rose Comella $1000 scholarship and an additional $500 award, as well as those offered by the National ALA have been made available to the local school. Please urge any young people in your families who are Seniors in High School to apply for ALL the scholarships awarded by the American Legion Family. They are listed in the “Need A Lift” catalog available at the school and at the local library.
Thanks for saving Campbell brand labels and UPCʼs for our local schools, which can redeem them for education funds. Labels dropped off at the Post Home over the summer have been turned over to local schools. Just a reminder, eligible products are: UPCʼs (or entire labels if you prefer) from ALL Campbellʼs Soups, Beans, SpagettiOʼs, Gravies, Tomato and V8 Juices, Swanson Broth and Canned Chicken, Pepperidge Farm products and Franco-American products.
Thanks also for the Betty Crocker Box Tops for Education which can be an additional source of funds for the schools. If you prefer to donate to your local school, please put a note in the Coupon box telling us of the number of labels or box tops.

Annual Craft and Bake Sale
The 22nd Annual Craft Show and Bake Sale will be held Saturday, Nov 7th, 2009, 8:30-3:00 at Post Home, sponsored by Unit #256 Auxiliary. We are again holding our “Super Raffle. Many members have tickets for sale at a $1.00 a chance. Bake Sale Committee will be calling our
members for “Bake goods” donations for our Annual Bake Sale. There are a few tables left so if you or know of someone who would like a table for Crafts, cost $16.00 per table, please contact
Rose Cornish at 394-1434. This is a great time to do some holiday shopping! Lunch will be available from 11:30 AM to 1 PM. See you there!!

Legislation by Chair Marie Trumbull.
There are still several legislative issues that we need to pressure Congress about. Of particular interest is H.R. 3365, the Medicare Reimbursement Act of 2009, introduced by US. Rep. Bob Filner, D-Calif. Under this bill, veterans with non-service connected injuries, illnesses and conditions would be allowed to use their Medicare benefits to receive care and services from a VA medical facility. The VA is currently barred from billing Medicare. Keep informed about the
status of the health care issue under discussion in Washington and let your representatives
know your wishes. Of local interest is the increased State taxes on utilities that will negatively affect all of us, but especially those on a fixed income. Again, let your representatives know your wishes on this issue.

DONʼT FORGET TO VOTE this fall and help a Veteran to vote if you know someone who needs a ride to perform his or her civic duty.

Honor Flight Rochester has invited the Legion Family to help welcome home groups of WW II Veterans and their guardians from their trips to Washington, D. C. on Oct. 18 at 12:25 PM, AirTran Flight 486 and Nov. 1 at 12:25 PM, AirTran Flight 486.
In Memory: Our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Bertha Berryman.

SAL Squadron News
Squadron Commander Brian Murphy
585-455-1892
Greetings to all members and welcome to all new members. I hope that everyone had a good summer (what summer?). Our meetings are the third Tuesday of the month at 6:30 PM. We still need more members attending our meetings. You pay your dues and it is your right and privilege to attend meetings. We need memberʼs input for various projects and functions. It is the voice of many, not a few that can make a squadron great. If the meeting time or day are a problem, please let us know. The time and day can be changed to what works best for the
majority of members. The squadron is in need of new ideas for projects and fundraisers.
A typical meeting lasts about 45 minutes and is open to Jr. and dual members. At the time of this writing, there is no old business to discuss. We do have one item of new business.

The post has asked us to consider getting an SAL plaque similar to the Legion and Auxiliary plaques that are behind the bar. I found a plaque on-line that looks very similar, but the price was outrageous - $259.00 for a polyurethane foam plaque! The 2 plaques that the post has are made of wood and were made by a post member. We have an SAL member who is looking into making our plaque. This could be a group project for two or three of our members; if you are interested, please contact Wayne or myself. On the subject of projects, there is always something to do at the post as far as building and maintenance. Please stop in to the post and talk with some of the members.

With the fall and holiday seasons coming, please check the post calendar for any upcoming events. Your 2010 membership cards are also now available. $20 for adults, $10 for junior members. You may pay your dues to any elected Officer or at the lounge. For continuous years of membership, you must pay your 2009 membership as well.

BAR MANAGERʼs REPORT by Wayne Inman
Summer has ended and, along with the fall season, the Post has taken on some major improvements. The Fred Schutz Memorial is almost completed, along with the new sidewalks
and storage area at the pavilion. A great job by all the members who volunteered their time and effort to make these improvements possible. Thanks guys!

A special kudo to Post Commander Bob Fredericks for MCing a very moving 9/11 ceremony.

Save the date: October 10th, for our first jamboree at the Post home, featuring Natural Image. Admission is $3.00 per person/$5.00 per couple. Come and have a foot stomping time.

Finally, please be aware of a new bartender coming on board. Please be patient and carry your card!

Legion News
from Tom Irland, Commander

Congratulations to our new officers for the upcoming Legion year: Commander Bob Fredericks, First Vice Commander Dick Milton, Second Vice Commander Irene Madru, Third Vice Commander Norma Weissend, Adjutant Fran Bucher and Finance Officer Dan Bresnan. I would also like to congratulate our new Ontario County Commander, Jerry Luzum. I wish all of you success in the upcoming Legion Year.

I would like to thank everyone who has helped Post 256 for the past two-and-one half years while I served as Commander. We have made some strong progress in a number of areas. We never could have done it without the support of the entire LEGION FAMILY. Our membership stands at 442 paid members, two over our goal or 100.45%. This was a great Post effort and along with 4 other Posts in Ontario County which achieved 100% of their membership goal, boosted the County to 4th in the Department at 100.35%.

Celebrate our country’s Freedom for the past 233 years.

For God and Country, Tom Irland.

Ontario County Legion Officers for 2009-10
In addition to the Post Officers, Ontario County elected Jerry Luzum as Commander, Don Springer First Vice Commander, Gary Finnerty Second Vice Commander and Don Hergenroder Third Vice Commander. Jack Clancy will serve as the Seventh District Commander.

Continuous Membership
On June 7th, 2008, Canandaigua Post 256 held an awards ceremony for continuous membership. This ceremony honored 6-25 year continuous members: Arthur Andrews, Charles (Al) Bender, John Bennett, Alex Goncarobs, Jimmie Selders and Noel Wido. The 8-30 year honorees were: Greg Bennett, Albert (Cy) Carlson, Louis Colunio, Philip Pelerite, Ron Phillips, Donald Raw, James Scheele and John West. The 3-35 year members were Louis Madru, Ralph Salato, and Dennis Cunningham. There were 9-40 year members: Paul Alford, Thomas Edgar, Howard Ertel, Dan Johnson, James Johnson, Joseph Jung, Robert McDonald, John Moran and Richard Rivet. We were honored to have 4-50 year members: Robert Hunt, Charles Twitchell, Joseph Watson and Richard Woodams and 2-55 year members, James Liberatore and Robert Mulheron. By the way, 50 year members Robert Hunt and Charles Twitchell attended as did the 2-55 year members James Liberatore and Robert Mulheron. Commander Tom Irland assisted Irene Madru with the awards. A light lunch followed the ceremony. Chef Dave Schaefer did a wonderful job with the lunch and cake. Out of 32 honorees, 14 were able to attend. The RSVP response wasn’t up to par! When the invitation letter states RSVP by a certain date, it is meant by that date so arrangements can be made for the food count, etc. Many thanks to all who attended.
A special thanks to all who contributed their time behind the scenes; Wayne Inman, Bill Kraft, Deb Flora, Jerry Luzum, Terry Dekouski and Bob Fredricks and anyone else I might have inadvertently missed. And, thank you Irene for all your hard work for coordinating this celebration.

2009 Post 256 Scholarship Winners
by Norma Weissend
The following Canandaigua Academy Seniors were awarded scholarships of $750 each during their Commencement Exercises on June 27, 2009.
James Knapp Scholarship Award: Devan Mizzoni. Devan plans on attending CUNY Hunter College in New York City to study International Relations. Devan maintained a consistent mid-90s average in her History classes and was considered an outstanding student by her American History teacher. She has taken leadership roles in student government. She has also been active with the Girl Scouts.

Sesto Vecchi Scholarship Award: Caitlin VerSchneider. Caitlin’s intended course of study is Secondary Education in Mathematics at Nazareth College in Rochester. Caitlin is a member of the National Honor Society and was active in student government and community service. Her math teacher and counselor have praised her as the one of the finest students they have ever worked with.
The Post wishes Devan and Caitlin much success in their college careers.

Congratulations also to Madison Shoemaker, a fifth grader, who received the American Legion Citizenship Award at a recent Canandaigua Elementary School ceremony.

G. Fred Schutz Memorial
The construction of the memorial is taking shape with completion scheduled for this summer. The memorial consists of three parts: six 20 foot flag poles displaying the six service flags; a granite bench with the memorial inscription for Fred and a 30 foot walkway on which the bench will sit along with a flower urn. The poles and flags are in place and the bench and urn have been delivered. These last two items will be placed as soon as the walkway is finished.

Post Website and E-Mail
We are slowly bringing the Post into the technology of 21st century. The website is almost complete and the e-mail address is getting activity. Because the cost of bulk mail has increased again in May, we would like to make use of these two communication tools to keep our mailing, paper and labor costs down. You will now be able to read your quarterly Post newsletter on-line, either at the website or we can e-mail it to you. If you would like to read it on line or have your newsletter e-mailed to you, please send an e-mail to: post256@alny256.com and put “Post Newsletter” in the subject line and indicate your desire to read it on line or have it e-mailed to you. In either case we will take you off the mailing list. Visit the Post website at: http://www.alny256.com/

American Legion Baseball
Our baseball chairman, Calvin Nichols, will post the schedule of our senior and junior American Legion Baseball teams sponsored by the Post. The home games for the senior team are played at Evans Field, the junior team at Canandaigua Academy Field and are great sports entertainment. As a matter of note, 65% of major league baseball players participated in American Legion Baseball.

Cash Bash
Bob Fredricks has volunteered to chair this event this year. The early bird drawing is August 22nd and the final drawing is September 26th. Please strongly consider buying a ticket for the drawing and dinner. This is a major fundraiser for the Post activities and requires our strong support. Our thanks and appreciation to Bob and all the ticket sellers.

St. Pauly Clothing
Fran Bucher and Dan Bresnan deserve a most sincere thank you and recognition for a job well done for their work at the St. Pauly Clothing Building. Fran accepted the responsibility to coordinate this project nearly 5 years ago in December 2004. Proceeds from this project have brought in some $20,000 since that time. In part, these funds have been used for a scholarship and most recently the tree carving on the Trail of Remembrance. An extra special thanks to Dan who is at the shed nearly every day. Thanks Dan. But we can always use more help. Many hands make light work so we always welcome more workers in this excellent source of money to fund our projects. It takes only a few minutes each day. You can determine the amount of involvement you can afford. Also, when you clean out those closets, bring your usable clothing and shoes to the building in the back parking lot and help fund the Legion projects. Donations are tax deductible.

Help Wanted
Age and infirmity have brought the number of members in our Color Guard and Honor Guard to a dangerously low level. The demand for the services of these two units remains high, especially during the spring, summer and fall with military funerals, parades and dedications. Training will be provided, all we need is your commitment to help. Many times these units provide the Face of the American Legion to a grieving family or the Canandaigua community that line the streets to watch a parade. Call Chuck Pelton at 289-9531 for more information.

Keep This Date
Please mark your calendar and participate in the following event:
Patriot Day Ceremony at the Post 7 PM, 9/11.

VA&R
Deb Dekouski & Debbi Peters, Chairmen

On June 23rd, we held our annual Veterans Picnic at the pavilion at the Post. It was a gorgeous day, the sun was shining and a beautiful breeze. There were 60 Veterans who enjoyed hamburgers, hot dogs, macaroni salad, salt potatoes, baked beans, fresh fruit cup, pickles, home made cookies and assorted beverages. Each Veteran received a door prize and a great time was had by all.
I would like to thank Marie Trumbull, Florence Trumbull, Rose Cornish, Barb
Saar, Rosemary Luzum, Debbi Peters, Sandy Councellor and whoever else made the delicious cookies. I also want to thank Dave, our caterer and Jessie for all their hard work.
Some of you might have missed seeing some of our Veterans from the Veterans
Club on the first Wednesday for dinner. They have made other arrangements for the summer, but will be returning in September. Bea Plympton, who unselfishly gave of her time at the Veterans Club, passed away in June. She will be sadly missed by many Veterans, family and friends. Bill Burlingame has kindly been opening the Veterans Club Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 4 - 7 PM.

75 Club Raffle
Ruth Neilson, Chairman

There may be slots open for this program. Please check with me if you are interested in joining the “75 Club Raffle” sponsored by the Auxiliary. This Raffle helps fund Auxiliary sponsored programs such as Scholarships and Veteran’s activities. Our drawing is the last Thursday of the month at 6PM in the lounge. The winner receives $500, if present, or $250 if not. The raffle is $10/month payable in advance.

Manufacturer Coupons
National Security Chair, Rosemary Luzum.
Thanks to everyone who saves the manufacturers coupons for our military families overseas. During April, May and June, 88 volunteers spent 230 hours so we could send coupons valued at $55,500 to military bases overseas. Please remember, though, Coupons must be no older than three months from the current month. Although the commissaries honor coupons recently expired, only coupons dated May, 2009 or later will still be accepted when they reach the facility overseas. So, bring those coupons in often so they don’t become too old to be usable. I especially appreciate if you are able to cut out the coupons so my mother, Ceil Meier, and I don’t get scissor cramp. I keep track of the hours so include a note of the time this task took.
One of our members assisted in delivering two Blue Star Banners to families of servicemen.

Annual Craft and Bake Sale
The 22nd Annual Craft and Bake Sale will be held Saturday, Nov. 7th, 2009 - 8:30 - 3:00 at Post Home, sponsored by Unit #256 Auxiliary. Anyone interested in a table, contact Rose Cornish, 394-1434. More information to come in next newsletter.

Children and Youth
Sandy Counceller, Chair

The Special People’s Picnic will be July 18th at Post 256 from 12 - 2 PM. All are welcome to join us in celebrating with our special guests.

Empire Girls State
Barbara Saar, Chair

The purpose of Girls (and Boys) State is to awaken in the youth of our nation a sincere conviction that well informed, intelligent, participating citizens are vitally needed to protect and preserve our American Democracy. Girls State is a mythical “51st” state, wherein, through actual participation, the girls share the duties, responsibilities and privileges of American citizenship. Each citizen has an active part in some phase of state, city or county government, thereby
learning that government is just what the citizen makes it. Girls State orientation was at Dundee, with Barbara Saar, Marlene Milton, and Ruth Bundy attending. Our Girls State delegate, Chelsea Vieble, attended with her mother, Christine.
If you have a junior in high school, a son, daughter or grandchild, urge them to investigate the Boys and Girls State program next year. It’s an adventure that is well worth while.

Education
Marie Trumbull, Deb Dekouski & Rose Cornish -Chairs

The “ALA” $500 award was presented to David Zanghi at the Awards Ceremony held at Canandaigua Academy. This year’s “Rose Comella Scholarship” winner
for $1,000 was Nick Sabia.

Legislation
Marie Trumbull, Chair

We need to continue to pressure Congress about issues of patriotism and those concerning our veterans. Keep informed and keep those letters going to your legislators. Please let me know if you receive a reply from any legislator as Department wants to keep a tally.

In Memory
Our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Mildred Mitchell.

Legion News
As we move through the tail end of winter, our thoughts can now turn to spring and we can look forward to longer, as well as warmer days. This winter has been a challenge, to say the least. A few of our “Snow Birds” will be returning soon. A word on membership. I would like to thank, very much. the hundreds of dedicated members who have paid their 2009 dues to this point. We only need less than 20 more dedicated members to step forward and pay their dues. Time is of the essence, as our “membership year” is winding down. It would be a true sense of pride, to all of us, to achieve our 2009 goal of 440 members.
The “Honor Guard” from our Post provides a very important mission. This dedicated group of members needs additional people who have the time to be a part of this worthy cause. All training will be provided to fit your schedule. Just call the Post at 394-3790 and leave your
name and phone number and Chuck Pelton will contact you.
Let us all remember to pray for our members that are sick and cannot be with us. Also, let us pray for our fellow veterans, men and women, who are serving around the world protecting our
freedom.

For God and Country,
Tom Irland, Commander

Canandaigua VAMC News
by Jerry Luzum

Three items of interest.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced that the Canandaigua facility will receive $3.6 million for needed building improvements as a part of the Stimulus Bill. The Rochester Outpatient Clinic is opening a satellite facility at Clinton Crossing for speciality care, thus relieving some of the overcrowding at the main Westfall Road Clinic. Representatives from the Department of Veterans Affairs held a public meeting in February regarding the Enhanced Use Lease (EUL) of certain properties at the VAMC. The VA wishes to enter into a long term lease (up to 75 years) for a selected developer to lease VAMC Building 14 and approximately 3 acres of associated land. The proposed uses on the EUL site include transitional housing, single room occupancy housing, and/or family reintegration housing. The VA expects the majority of such housing to serve veterans on a priority basis. A request for proposals will be provided to interested developers in
the near future. Public hearings will be held to get community input on the proposals. Please attend these meetings and express your views. Information about the VAMC can be found on -
www.canandaigua.va.gov.

G. Fred Schutz Memorial
Representatives from the Legion, Auxiliary and SAL have met to discuss a fitting tribute to the “Sergeant Major” who enriched the lives of so many through his tireless dedication and service to others in our community. The tribute will be in the form of six flags, a walkway and bench near the flag pole in front of the Legion. The six flags will include the five service flags and the Legion flag atop 20 foot flag poles spaced along the inside of the semicircular drive. The organizations making up the Legion Family have contributed the funds to construct the memorial which is expected to be completed in the summer.

Post Improvement Ham Drawing
A special thanks to all who bought tickets to the raffle, the proceeds to which are going to fund the projects for the local ‘special children’. A special special thank you to the Genesee Valley
Wastewater Management Association for their generous donation to support this effort. The ten winners were: Kris Ratcliffe, Tom Irland, Corky Smith, Marlene Milton, Chuck Pelton, Linda
Savage, Nan Evans, Nancy Kurzejeski, and Tom Gondner.

Post 256 Web Site
Norma Weissend (our web master), Jason Grover and Dave Simmons continue to work on the two web sites for Post 256. Keep posted on http://www.alny256.com/ for progress. This project has taken on increased importance since we intend to post the newsletter on the web site and offer an option to send it via email to members who have email addresses. This would reduce the expense of mailing, the cost of which goes up in May.

Auxiliary News
from Barbara Saar, President

Another year is almost to an end. It’s been a difficult year for me but, with everyone’s help, I did make it. Been busy with County meetings, Board of Directors and Post Improvement meetings. The Four Chaplains ceremony was Feb. 4 at the VA. The Women’s Tea in November at the VA was a wonderful celebration. Department President Sue Britton’s visitation, was Feb. 26, with a soup and sandwich lunch provided by the Phelps Legion Family and a wonderful dinner at the Geneva Post.

Election of Unit officers will be at the April meeting, with installation in May. The nominating committee consists of Jeanne Stahl, Rose Cornish and Marie Trumbull. I hope everyone will be willing to help on our committees. Hope you have a Happy Easter.

Upcoming 75 Club Raffle drawings will be on April 30, May 28, June 25 and July 30 at 6 pm. We are always looking for names for the waiting list. Please contact Ruth Neilson or sign the sheet at the Post.

The ALA Unit meetings will be at 2:00 PM on April 7 & 21, May 5 & 19 and June 2 & 16. Don’t forget that we recess over the summer, with no meetings in July or August. We resume on Sept 1st.

The next County ALA meeting will be in Shortsville on April 15 at 7:30 PM. The May 20 meeting is currently scheduled to be in Honeoye.

Girls State
by Barb Saar and Co-chair Marie Trumbull

Interviewing for our Girls’ State candidate was on March 10 at Canandaigua Academy. I want to thank Marie Trumbull, Rose Cornish and Jeanne Stahl for assisting me. Our Girls’ State representative this year is Chelsea Weible and the alternate is Barbara Broderich. Girls’ State, which will be held from June 27 to July 3, again this year at Brockport College, is a program at which high school juniors from across the state learn about our American government, the political process and leadership by creating a model state government. The citizens will also be involved in a Flag Retirement Service and learn how to fold the American flag. An added bonus is that attendance at Girls’ State makes the citizen eligible for college credits and a scholarship awarded by Samsung Corp.

Rummage Sale
Stop by the Post on April 24th (9 AM-7PM) or 25th (9 AM - 12 noon) to browse the tables in the basement to pick up some bargains and support our fund raising efforts for our Veterans Projects. Donations of goods are welcome on April 23rd at the rear entrance to the basement.

by Rose Cornish
A special thanks to all who have paid their 2009 dues! Your dues money enables the Unit to continue our many projects for the community, and especially our Veterans! Thanks again! We are very close to our goal for the year so, if you have not renewed your membership, please send it in as soon as possible. Please welcome the following new members: Junior member Caitley Newhook, Senior members Norma Pelton and Barbara Flora and transfer Kristine Ratcliffe.

Craft and Bake Sale
by Rose Cornish, Chairman
A date to save is Saturday, Nov 7th, 2009 from 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM. More information in the next newsletter.

Poppy Days
by Chairman Marlene Milton
Once again we are getting ready to offer poppies to the people in our community. Poppy days will be Thursday, May 21, thru Saturday, May 23rd. I will be putting up the sign-up board around the beginning of May, with times and places. It takes every one working together to make this very important program for our organization work. It is the money that is donated for the poppies that lets us do so many of the important things that we enjoy doing to help our
veterans. These are the men and women who have done so much for us and we can’t ignore them or forget them. Please try to find a couple of hours to offer these poppies. It will make you feel good inside, I promise.

VA&R
Deb Dekouski and Debbie Peters, Co Chairs.

Our monthly Spaghetti/Roast Beef dinners for vets from the Veterans Club continues to be a crowd pleaser, thanks to Debbie Peters and her assistants. Again this year, valentines were distributed to 63 vets in group homes and to 5 female vets at the VAMC. Thanks to Marlene Milton for coordinating this effort.

Manufacturer Coupons
National Security Chair, Rosemary Luzum.
Our supporters have done an outstanding job of supplying the Auxiliary with manufacturer’s coupons. REMEMBER!!! Coupons MUST be no older than three months passed their expiration
date. So stop by the Post often with your coupons. Since December, 51 volunteers have spent 201 hours so we could send coupons valued at $40,100 to our military families overseas. GOOD JOB, EVERYONE. The thank you notes we receive from these bases are heart warming.

Our Unit participated in the Wreaths Across America program that provided wreaths for soldier’s graves at veterans cemeteries. Ours went to the Bath VA Cemetery. Perhaps you saw the photo in the newspaper of the wreaths against the snow.

Education
by Chair Marie Trumbull
Please continue to save your Campbell brand labels and UPC’s for our local schools for education funds. Labels can be dropped off at the Post Home and deposited in the same box in the lounge as the manufacturer’s coupons. Likewise, Betty Crocker Box Tops for Education can be a source of funds for the schools. If you prefer to donate to your local school, please put a note in the Coupon box telling us of the amount of your donation.
Information about the ALA Rose Comella Scholarship, which is awarded each spring, has been made available to students at Canandaigua Academy. Please urge any young people in your
families who are Seniors in High School to apply for ALL the scholarships awarded by the American Legion Family. They are listed in the “Need a Lift” book available at the school counselor’s office and at the public library.

Legislation
Chair Marie Trumbull
We need to continue to pressure Congress about issues of patriotism and those concerning our veterans. Keep informed and keep those letters going to your legislators. Please let me know if
you receive a reply from any legislator as the Department wants to keep a tally.

Children and Youth
by Sandy Counceller
Our Special People’s picnic is scheduled for July 18 in the pavilion, weather permitting. Volunteers are always welcome to help our special guests enjoy the food and games.

In memory:
Our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Dorothy Yautzy.

Sons of the American Legion News
The Sons of the American Legion was created in 1932 as an organization within The American Legion. The S.A.L. is made up of males of all ages whose parents or grandparents served in the
United States military and were eligible for membership in The American Legion. Together, members of The Legion, The Auxiliary and The S.A.L. make up what is known as The Legion Family. All three organizations place high importance on preserving our American traditions and
values, improving the quality of life for our nation’s children, caring for veterans and their families, and, perhaps most importantly, teaching fundamentals of good citizenship.
As of this writing, we are near our goal of 90% paid membership. If you owe dues, please pay them as soon as possible. Our meetings are the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 6:30 PM. The
next meeting will be April 21st. Please attend our meetings; this is the only way you can voice your opinion. I look forward to fresh ideas from our squadron.
There are many things that we can do for fundraisers, community service and for the Post. Your input is needed. Jeremy Hoy is always looking for help escorting VA patients to church
service. This takes about an hour of time once a month. This is a small thing that can mean so much to our veterans. I find it very sad that the VA is located in Canandaigua and none of our squadron is willing to volunteer.
Our Squadron will be working with the Legion and Auxiliary for a memorial for Fred Schutz. Fred was a long time member of 256 and a veteran’s advocate. Some knew him as Sgt Major, as was the name of the bar he owned. Our squadron has pledged $500 towards this memorial and will help out with the labor. If you would like to volunteer some time, please call me @ 455-1892. We need help on a Saturday about a month from now. This will involve general labor and lots of fun.
The Squadron will be doing at least one chicken BBQ this year and, as always, we need volunteers. Let’s put the fun back in fundraising. I am also looking for help on Memorial Day. I would like a few members of the Squadron to help pass out small flags to all the children along the parade route. The picture of our Main Street lined with flags for our own veterans as they march by would be awesome.
Dwight D. Eisenhower said: “A sense of humor is part of leadership, of getting along with people, of getting things done.”
For the good of the Legion Family.

From the Steward
from Bob Fredricks
Now that the weather is starting to change, consider using the pavilion for graduations, family reunions and weddings. A thank you to all who enjoyed the chicken and biscuits over the winter,
this menu item will return in the fall.

Note from the Newsletter Editor
Due to the increase in postal rates taking effect in May, a concerted effort has been made to reduce duplicate mailings. But to reduce Newsletter mailings to an incorrect address I need
your help. Since bulk mail is not returned by the Post Office, those Newsletters sent to the wrong address are simply discarded. Please advise the Legion Post of any change in address. Thank You.

Deadline
The newsletter is published quarterly. Deadline for the July - September issue is June 27th.
